As my eldest daughter was preparing to leave for college, I started to feel a pit in the bottom of my stomach. Was I sad about her leaving? Was I anxious? Was I wondering if I prepared her well enough or worried she would struggle being away from home?
As much as I was doing my best to relish this time with my daughter and share in her excitement as she embarked on this new and exciting journey in her life, my heart was filled with trepidation.
After deep reflection – most of which I pondered lying awake at 3 o’clock in the morning – I realized that I wasn’t really worried about her ability to settle into college life and I knew, deep in my heart, that I had done my very best to prepare her well. My worries were much deeper than that…
I was worried about her safety.
I couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that kept encroaching on my mental space. As each day drew closer to her departure, I found my deep-rooted feelings coming closer to the surface.
As a woman and a mom, I honestly wish I didn’t feel this way.
I wish I wasn’t nervous about my girl walking around campus at night.
I wish I didn’t stress about how she’ll get home in the dark after a long night of studying at the library.
I wish I had the comfort of knowing that she’ll be safe and that nothing can harm her there.
But the stark reality is this…
This is the world we live in – a world where young women (and young men, too) always need to be aware of their surroundings and who they engage with.
Trying to prepare and educate her, I found myself gently sliding in my “mom lectures” as often as I could.
“Don’t forget to buddy up.”
“Make sure you never walk alone at night.”
“Keep an eye on your surroundings and please, don’t accept an open drink from anyone.”
“Educate yourself on the campus security system. Security personnel can be there in minutes if you need them.”
One evening, when I broached the topic of safety yet again, my daughter reassured that me that she had taken the initiative to stay safe in college. She told me she had done some research and wanted to sit down with me and talk about a few things she wanted to purchase to ensure her safety.
At that moment, my mama heart exhaled a bit. My girl was taking matters into her own hands. That’s when I realized she had been listening to me all along.
If you (like me) find yourself worried about your daughter’s campus safety, here are a few products that are keeping my daughter safe in college. (Some products are perfect for guys, too!)
3 Products That Are Keeping My Daughter Safe in College
#1 InvisaWear Smart Jewelry Safety Device
InvisaWear is a bracelet with a cleverly concealed GPS tracker. The charm on the bracelet has a hidden button on the backside that can be pushed if/when your daughter feels threatened or is in a dangerous situation, sending an alert to up to five emergency contacts and the police via an app.
My daughter wears this bracelet to parties on and off-campus and really anytime she goes out at night. The best part is, would-be attackers have no idea the bracelet doubles as a Smart safety device.

#2 Drink Cover Scrunchie – For Drink Spiking Prevention
As a mom, one of my greatest fears is that my daughter will be out with friends or at a party and someone will drop a date/rape drug into her drink.
The Drink Cover Scrunchie prevents that. It’s a cleverly designed drink cover that is dually functional as an actual scrunchie. That way, when my daughter ventures out with friends, she can wear the scrunchie on her wrist or in her hair and, when the time comes, she can use it to wrap it around her glass or cup to ensure pills or powders can’t be dropped into her drink.
For under $13 on Amazon, it’s worth its weight in gold to keep our daughters safe!

#3 Personal Self Defense Keychain Alarm
This keychain offers two-in-one protection that will give any girl in college another layer of comfort when she ventures out on campus at night or virtually any time. (Because we all know plenty of attacks on women happen in broad daylight.)
What’s great is that this handy keychain can easily be clipped onto a backpack or handbag and it has the ability, with the pull of a pin, to unleash a 130-decibel screech along with a bright flashing light creating immediate attention.
And, since the one thing would-be attackers don’t want is attention, this inexpensive keychain puts the power back into your daughter’s hands.
