This Post: Hey Mom, 36 Fun Ideas to Bond with Your Teen Daughter This Summer
Written By: Nancy Reynolds
Summer with a teen daughter is a funny thing…
One minute she’s locked away in her room, and the next she’s sitting on the kitchen counter munching on Cheetos, telling you stories about her friends, her dreams, and everything happening in her world.
Those moments when she “lets you in?” They’re pure gold!
Here’s the trick, Mom… spending quality (and wonderful) time with your girl isn’t about forcing it or making her feel guilty if she doesn’t, it’s simply creating relaxed, casual opportunities for it to happen. Sometimes, all it takes is a shared adventure, a little spontaneity like a trip to grab a smoothie or an iced coffee, or a willingness to say, “Sure! Let’s do it!”
Make the absolute most of this summer (‘cuz it won’t be like forever) by making room for fun, laughter, late-night conversations, and the memories that both of you will remember forever!
Hey Mom, 36 Fun Ideas to Bond with Your Teen Daughter This Summer
Here are 36 fun, unique, and, yep… maybe even a little silly ways to bond with your teen daughter this summer!
1. Take a “Yes” Day Adventure
Give your daughter a budget, let her plan the entire afternoon (or day), and just go along with whatever she has planned. The fun part? She’s in charge for a change and, chances are, she’ll plan something unexpected and maybe even a little crazy. That’s the fun part!
2. Create a Summer Bucket List Together
Whether you put 10 things on your list or 50, write down things you want to do together before summer comes to an end. Then start checking things off one by one.
Maybe you want to go for mani/pedis, visit an outlet mall two towns away, or plan a fun weekend getaway. Either way, write ’em down and start planning!
3. Have a Fancy Dessert Crawl
My daughter and I did this, and it was SO much fun! Visit three different places (preferably places you’ve never been to) and share desserts. You can also do this with appetizers!
4. Plan a Sunrise Breakfast Date
I know… getting your daughter out of bed early in the morning may not be easy, but you can make it worth her while!
Have breakfast on a terrace, outdoor porch, or even a cool spot where you can watch the world come alive. Then order something on the menu that you’ve never tried before and accompany it with a fun early morning “mocktail!” If the budget is tight, skip the restaurant and do a sunrise picnic. Bring easy and delish breakfast foods to munch on!)
5. Take a Random EXIT Road Trip
Making memories doesn’t have to involve big plans or spending a lot of money… sometimes, the best memories are made doing totally random things! Choose an unfamiliar exit and see where it takes you! Maybe you end up at a fun new coffee cafe that serves awesome pastries, or a new store you never heard of. It doesn’t matter. It’s all about hanging out together.
6. Build the Ultimate Summer Snack Board
The fun part is that the snack board can be anything you like… just include your favorites! Need ideas? Check out these fun ideas!
7. Have Your Own Two-Person Book Club
This is especially fun for book lovers! Here’s how it goes… each of you gets to choose one book that BOTH of you will read at the same time. It can be anything from a mystery book to sci-fi to non-fiction. Then, spend quality time talking about the book together. It keeps you connected while doing something fun you both enjoy.
8. Have a “Let’s Get Moving” Day
Try doing something fun, active, and adventurous. Maybe it’s paddleboarding, kayaking, renting jet skis, zip-lining, or hiking… whatever you both decide on! It’s the perfect way to spend time together while you both “get moving!”
9. Iced Coffee Date
If you and/or your daughter are busy this summer, finding time to hang out might not be easy. But spending time together doesn’t have to be complicated. Even if it’s 30 minutes or an hour, grab those moments! If your girl loves iced coffee, hit the local coffee cafe and just sip and savor each other’s company.
10. Create a Summer Playlist (Then Blast It In the Car)
Take turns choosing songs you want to add to the playlist. Then, the next time you’re in the car together, crank it up!
11. Tour Open Houses
My girls and I have done this. Even if you’re not moving, it’s surprisingly fun.
12. Hit a Few Garage Sales
You never know what you’ll find at a garage sale! Go with an open mind and a few bucks in your pocket…. You might just come home with a treasure you never expected.
13. Take a Class Together
Dance, yoga, cooking, crafting—anything goes.
14. Visit a Local Festival
Enjoy the music, food, and atmosphere. It’s fun, most of the time it’s free, and it’s an easy way to spend time together that doesn’t feel forced.
15. Do a Little Crafting
Let your daughter choose something she wants to make–maybe it’s a bracelet, a new blanket for her bedroom, or new bedroom decor— spend time buying the supplies and making it together!
16. Write a “Letter to Each Other” (Open in 5 Years)
Write about how you feel about your daughter, things you love about her, and where you think she might be in life in five years. Offer her advice, remind her of her worth, or just share silly memories. Just write what’s in your heart. Then, have your daughter do the same! Open each other’s letters in five years.
17. Have A Spa Day (or Plan One at Home)
There’s nothing like getting pampered. But getting pampered right alongside your daughter is even better! Whether you give each other mani-pedis at home or splurge and hit a salon for an afternoon of “together time,” the relaxed environment is sure to bring on quiet conversations you’ll both remember.
18. Visit a Farmer’s Market
They really ARE fun! Fruit, veggies, flowers, and little things you can’t find anywhere else! Maybe you just stroll OR pick out a few ingredients and make dinner together that evening.
19. Make a Fake Cooking Show
A friend of mine and her daughter did this, and they had the BEST time! (The video was hilarious!) Record yourselves attempting to make a recipe while acting like celebrity chefs.
20. Update Your Daughter’s Bedroom
Does your daughter’s bedroom still have little pink flowers on the wall? Maybe it’s time for a makeover. Paint the walls (if you’re handy), buy new bedding, lamps, a rug, and a few new accessories for her walls. Your girl will feel awesome, and you’ll have fun choosing things together.
21. Take a “No Cell Phones Allowed” Sunset Drive
Turn off the phones, crank up the music, roll down the windows, and just drive. You might be surprised how the conversation unfolds when you put away all the distractions.
22. Shop ‘Til You Drop Day
Hit a mall (try an outlet mall if you have one near you) and just stroll through the stores. Maybe your girl picks up a new top, and you find a new pair of shoes–a little “retail therapy” can go a long way! Then, grab a juicy burger, taco chips, and salsa or fab salad at a new restaurant you’ve never been to.
23. Stay Up Ridiculously Late
Order pizza, watch old family videos, or pop in a fun chick flick, or talk about everything and nothing.
24. Plan a Mother-Daughter Weekend Getaway
Sometimes, just getting away from it all can hit the reset button in life and in your relationship. Time together exploring, checking out new restaurants, sightseeing, or just hanging out at the beach–it doesn’t matter where you go or what you do… It’s about having quality time together.
27. Build a “Perfect Day” for Each Other
Plan an entire day based on everything your daughter loves, then let her do the same for you! Shopping, strolling through a bookstore, hiking, binge-watching a Netflix series… the trick is to plan a day the other one would love!
28. Have a Baking Challenge
You each choose one thing you want to bake and then spend the afternoon (or a few hours) messing up the kitchen, making a gooey chocolate cake, the best chocolate chip cookies in the world, or a decadent mousse. Then, rate each other’s dessert.
29. Get a Full “Glam” Makeover
Let an expert makeup artist give you both a glam look just for fun! Then, grab an appetizer or dinner at a restaurant and enjoy being “glammed up” for an evening.
30. The Compliment Challenge
Head to the mall, the grocery store, Target, or even the Dollar Store and challenge yourselves to compliment three people in one day. It can be about anything–their hair, their shoes, their smile, or jewelry they’re wearing.
(It’s actually really fun to see their reactions AND it feels good to make others feel special.)
31. Go to An Outdoor Concert
Check your local listing for summer outdoor concerts near you, or keep your eye on your daughter’s favorite band and surprise her with tickets!
32. Have a “20 Questions You Never Thought I’d Ask” Night
You each write down 20 questions that you’re dying to know but haven’t asked? You both have to agree not to ask anything TOO personal, and you each get a “free pass” to move on to the next question.
Question Ideas for Your Daughter:
- Are you crushing on anyone? Who are they and why?
- What’s one thing you wish I wouldn’t do?
- If you could have any career in the whole world, what would it be and why?
- What’s the hardest part about being a teenager?
Question Ideas for Mom:
- What’s the most embarrassing thing that happened to you when you were my age?
- Do you ever dream of doing something else with your life? What?
- If you could be really good at something, what would you choose?
- What’s one thing you want to do in the next five years?
33. Make Mocktails
Sift through Pinterest, magazines, or websites and find two or three fun mocktails to try this summer. Need ideas? Check out these fun summer mocktails!
34. Have a “Firsts” Day Every Week
Every week, you each get to choose one “first” –something you haven’t done before. It could be something simple like a new food you haven’t tried, or maybe something adventurous like going horseback riding or visiting a cave–the goal is to try something new together. (Be sure to say, “This is a FIRST for me!”)
35. Have a Late-Night Ice Cream Date
There’s something about being out late together that feels special to teenagers. Plus, what teen girl will pass up ice cream on a hot summer night?
36. Make a Summer Reel
Document your fun summer by setting aside one day to create a video that you’ll both cherish forever.
Here’s the thing we don’t like to think about, Mamas… our time with our girls is fleeting.
I mean, sure, we’ll always take time to carve out special time with them, but these days? The days of them living under our roof? They’re slipping by. So, have fun this summer and make memories that will forever linger in both your hearts.
