When I became a mom, I was convinced that the hard part of parenting was behind me when I got past my kids’ sleepless newborn stage and the toddler meltdowns that happened in the middle of the grocery store.

I was wrong…

There’s a season of parenting that no one really prepares you for. In fact, for a lot of parents, the hardest part comes later–after the sleepless nights and exhausting temper tantrums that test your patience–when the stakes get higher, the answers are unclear, and the child you spent years protecting (and bonding with) starts pushing you away, questioning everything, and testing every boundary.

The teen years.

The Teen Years Will Push You to Your Limits:12 Things Strong Parents Do to Get Through It

The mental and physical load of raising teenagers will wear you the heck out… It’s lying awake at night wondering if you’re being too strict or not strict enough, giving your teen enough freedom or holding on too tightly, and worrying whether anything you’re saying is getting through.

It’s dealing with swinging hormones, big emotions, and fierce tugs for independence that can suddenly make your sweet child seem like a stranger. It’s slammed doors, arguments you never saw coming, and far too many eye rolls and heavy sighs to count.

The teenage years don’t just test our kids.

They test us.

But here’s what I’ve learned: Strong parents aren’t the ones who never struggle. They’re the ones who find the resilience to keep going. They love when it’s easy, and they love when it’s hard. They stay steady when their teenager is anything but steady. They keep planting seeds, even when they can’t see anything growing. They keep showing up.

Because raising a teenager isn’t about getting everything right. It’s about going the long haul and refusing to give up.

Here are 12 things strong parents do when the teen years push them to their limits.

1. They Keep Things in Perspective

Parents who make it through the hardest parts of their kids’ teen years keep the big picture in mind. They know their teen isn’t a finished product–they’re a work in progress.

They don’t allow one bad day (or even a bad month) to convince them that they’re failing or that their teen is “headed in the wrong direction.” They zoom out. They know that these years can have bumps in the road and that growing up is messy and maturity takes time.

2. They Don’t Parent Out of Fear

This one is hard because parenting teenagers comes with a whole new level of worry.

When they were little, we worried they’d fall off the monkey bars and scrape their knee; now we worry about them making life-altering choices that can impact their future. We worry about who they’re hanging with, what they’re doing, their future, and so many things we can’t see.

But strong parents learn that fear impacts their parenting. Why? Because fear makes us want to control everything. Love helps us to teach, guide, and trust our kids.

3. And They Don’t Parent Out of Guilt

We might feel guilty because we work too much. Because we lost our patience. Because we couldn’t afford the fancy vacation or expensive clothes they asked for.

And sometimes that guilt causes us to overcompensate. We let things slide. We cave in and say yes when we should say no. We don’t ask too many questions because we don’t want to set them off.

Every parent feels guilt at some point. But strong parents recognize that guilt is just a feeling–not a compass. They take a deep breath and choose the path that will help their teen grow, even when their heart wants to make things easier.

4. They Don’t View Their Teen’s Independence as Rejection

This might be one of the hardest parts about parenting teens. We spend years teaching them to be independent… and then, one day, they actually do. And to our surprise, it’s SO hard on our hearts. “Nah, mom… I’ve got this.” or “Thanks Dad, but I don’t need your help.”

But strong parents remind themselves that their teenager needing them less physically doesn’t mean they need them less emotionally. Trust me, they STILL need you–just in quieter ways.

5. They Hold the Line, Even When It’s Hard as Hell

When your teen gets upset or yells, “You never let me do anything!” or when they accuse you of being too controlling (when you know you’re not), it’s hard not to take those digs to heart.

Strong parents understand that love often looks like, “I’m sorry. My answer is No.”  They set expectations. They follow through with consequences. And yes, sometimes they walk away thinking, “I really hope I’m doing the right thing.” But they know, one day, their teen just might look back and think, “They loved me enough to hold the line.”

6. They Stop Taking Every Reaction Personally

Have you ever noticed how teens are experts at making us feel like we’re the problem?

The eye rolls.
The big attitude.
The dramatic sighs.
The “Omg… I knooowww!”

Well, strong parents have the “911” on their teen… and they don’t allow their behavior to be a reflection of their parenting. Teenagers are going through massive changes biologically and emotionally, and they’re bound to toss a few grenades our way. Does that mean we ignore respect? Of course not. It means, when we’re strong, we don’t let every difficult moment convince us we’re failing.

7. They Fight to Stay Connected

When our kids were little, we called the shots. We protected them from danger, made decisions for them, and guided their every move. But our teens are growing up. They have their own thoughts, opinions, and ideas about who they want to become, and our ability to guide them shifts from controlling to influencing.

But influence only works when there is connection—and connection requires mutual respect.

Strong parents understand that their goal isn’t to control their teen, but to build a solid, loving relationship strong enough that their teen still wants to hear their voice. Because a teenager who feels loved, understood, and respected is far more likely to listen than a teenager who feels constantly controlled or judged.

8. They Stop Comparing Their Teen to Everyone Else’s Teen

This is one of the easiest traps to fall into. You see another teenager who seems more responsible, more motivated, more mature, more successful, and suddenly you start questioning everything.

Why isn’t my teen like that?”

What am I doing wrong?”

But strong parents remember that their teenager is on their own timeline. They might be on a pokey path to maturity. They might be strong in some areas and yet a little weak in others. That’s okay! They focus on their OWN child’s strengths, growth, unique qualities, and journey. Because our job isn’t to raise the next version of someone else’s kid, it’s to raise our child to be the very best version of themselves

9. They Focus on the Good Stuff

“Why are your shoes in the middle of the floor… again?” “Why didn’t you turn in that assignment? I reminded you three times!” It’s easy to get wrapped up in everything our teens are doing wrong.

But strong parents know that constantly focusing on their teens’ shortcomings won’t help them build a solid relationship with them. They make a point to notice the good, too. The random hugs out of nowhere, their teen’s hysterical one-liners that make them laugh, the way their teen thanked the waitress without being prompted, or the way they hugged their sister when she had a tough day.

That’s the good stuff, right there!

10. They Make Time for the Small Moments

Strong parents understand the value of meeting their teen where they’re at.

Sometimes, it’s a five-minute drive to grab coffee because their teen has a craving for a Caramel Macchiato or chicken nuggets from Chick-fil-A. Sometimes, it’s sitting together for 15 minutes watching silly TikTok videos or staying up a little later to catch their teen when they suddenly become chatty. They know ALL those small moments add up.

11. They Trust the Seeds They Planted

There will be moments you’ll wonder if your words are getting through. You’ll ask your teen to pick up their wet towels off the floor every single day. You’ll remind them to put their dishes in the dishwasher 50 times a month, and you’ll watch them make a questionable decision and think, “Have they heard anything I’ve ever said?”

But strong parents know that growing up takes time and that the seeds they planted, watered, and nurtured will one day blossom. The endless mom and dad advice, the values you modeled, the boundaries you held, the lessons you repeated over and over. They’re slowly taking hold. You just can’t see it… yet.

12. They Remember: It Won’t Be Like This Forever

The hard days are temporary, the eye rolls and sighs won’t last forever, and the forgotten chores and constant reminders will be memories you laugh about one day.

Soon enough, your teen will be living a life of their own–independent, capable, and confident. It just takes time…

So yes, the teen years will push you. They’ll test you to the limits and challenge you in ways you never expected.

But they’ll also teach you to love more deeply, trust a little more, and celebrate little victories along the way. Be strong, parents… keep showing up, keep learning, growing, forgiving, and trying again.

Mostly, keep loving your teenager with everything you’ve got… because nothing matters more than raising a young adult who knows, without a doubt, “No matter how hard these years got, I never had to question whether I was loved.”
