Do you feel like your teen could use a little inspiration? Maybe something that gets them fired up, encourages them to take a risk, or reminds them that they’re far more capable than they think?
Rather than giving them a pep talk (and risking a heavy sigh or an eye-roll), why not let a great movie do the talking?
Of course, convincing your teenager to watch a movie that will actually teach them something can be challenging. If your teen is anything like mine, the minute they hear words like “inspirational,” “life lesson,” or “based on a true story,” you can practically expect a moan and a “Geeez… do we have to watch that?”
But here’s what I’ve found: Now and then, a movie manages to sneak past that teenage skepticism. Whether it entertains them, draws them into a moving story, or quietly reminds them about courage, resilience, or the power of taking a chance, sometimes they walk away being inspired without even realizing it.
15 True Story Movies to Inspire Your Teen
We’ve come up with a list of truly powerful true story movies that are worth having your teen watch – not because you’re trying to turn movie night into a parenting lesson, but because sometimes a gripping story can inspire your teen in ways that a lecture never could.

1. Clouds (2020) – PG13
Clouds is based on the true story of a high school senior who learns he has terminal cancer and decides to spend his remaining time making music with his best friend. A song they write unexpectedly goes viral, turning their friendship and music into something that inspires people around the world. Starring Sabrina Carpenter, this movie is funny, emotional, uplifting, and will likely leave your teen wanting to make the most of their life (at least for a week or two).
2. Soul Surfer (2011) – PG
Soul Surfer is the incredible true story of teenage surfer Bethany Hamilton, who loses her arm in a shark attack but refuses to let it stop her from doing what she loves. It’s packed with surfing action, courage, friendship, and a serious comeback story – it’s not just a movie about overcoming something terrible. This one will leave your teen thinking, “If she can do that, maybe I can handle my own challenges, too.”
3. Apollo 13 (1995) – PG
Apollo 13 is the true story of three astronauts (including Tom Hanks, who plays Jim Lovell), whose mission to the moon goes horribly wrong, leaving them fighting to survive in space and somehow make it home alive. It has suspense, problem-solving, teamwork, and some seriously high-stakes moments – basically a real-life survival story with zero room for mistakes. If your teen likes movies where smart people have to think fast, work together, and pull off the nearly impossible, Apollo 13 is definitely worth watching.
4. Coach Carter (2005) – PG13
Coach Carter is based on the true story of a high school basketball coach who outrages his players by locking them out of the gym because of their bad grades. He expects them to work just as hard in the classroom as they do on the court, even when his rules make him unpopular. If your family is into basketball, underdog stories, or movies about proving that your future is bigger than what’s happening right now, this one is great.
5. Hidden Figures (2016) – PG
One of our family’s favorites. Hidden Figures tells the incredible true story of three brilliant women who worked at NASA in the early 1960s and played a crucial role in helping America win the space race while fighting racism and sexism along the way. Got a teen who would love to prove their doubters wrong? This gripping, powerful story is about people who refuse to let other people’s expectations define them. It’s absolutely worth watching.
6. The Impossible (2012) – PG13
The Impossible is about a family that was caught in the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and their incredible fight to survive and find each other afterwards. It’s intense, emotional, and suspenseful, and shows just how much courage, hope, and determination people can find when everything goes wrong. This is an unforgettable survival movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you appreciate the people you love. (This was also Tom Holland’s first major film role.)
7. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019) – PG
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is an incredible true story about a teenage boy in Malawi who uses his curiosity, creativity, and a library book to figure out how to build a wind turbine and help save his village from famine. It’s such a great reminder for teens that you don’t need money, fancy equipment, or someone else’s permission to come up with an idea that could make a difference. This ultimate underdog story proves that being curious and thinking differently can truly change lives.
8. McFarland, USA (2015) – PG
McFarland, USA is based on the true story of a high school coach who discovers that a group of talented teenagers from a small, economically challenged farming community in California might have what it takes to become an amazing cross-country team. This movie highlights friendship, hard work, family, and proving that where you come from doesn’t have to determine where you’re going. It’s such an uplifting story we think your family will love!
9. The Boys in the Boat (2023) – PG13
This movie is fantastic! The Boys in the Boat is the true story of a group of college students who come from tough circumstances and somehow row their way onto the U.S. Olympic team in 1936. It’s got underdogs, intense competition, teamwork, and the kind of comeback story that makes you want to get up off the couch and do something challenging.
10. October Sky (1999) – PG
An inspirational movie your teen will love… A teenager from a small West Virginia coal-mining town becomes fascinated with rockets and pursues a dream that seems completely out of reach. With the help and support of an amazing teacher who believes in him, he accomplishes something amazng many thought he never could. This movie is all about the power of perseverance, curiosity, and following your dreams.
11. Dunkirk (2017) – PG-13
Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk drops you right into the middle of one of the most incredible survival stories of World War II, when hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers were desperately trying to escape a beach surrounded by enemy forces. It’s intense, suspenseful, and visually stunning, with almost no downtime – you’ll actually feel like you’re there as soldiers, pilots, and ordinary civilians risk everything to help each other survive. If your family likes historical and/or action movies, Dunkirk is a must-watch film.
12. Stand and Deliver (1988) – PG
Stand and Deliver is based on the true story of a math teacher who convinces a group of students at a tough Los Angeles high school that they’re capable of far more than anyone expects. It’s another one with smart kids, big challenges, and a caring teacher who refuses to give up on them. If you have a teen who’s ever struggled academically and could use a reminder like, “Maybe I’m capable of more than I realize,” this is one movie they should definitely watch.
13. Thirteen Lives (2022) – PG-13
Thirteen Lives is the riveting, on-the-edge-of-your-seat story of the Thai soccer team that was trapped inside a flooded cave and the international rescue mission that raced against time to save them. It’s jam-packed with suspense, danger, teamwork, and a group of incredibly brave people who have to solve an almost impossible problem. I promise this one will keep your whole family glued to the screen.
14. Lion (2016) – PG-13
Lion is the true story of a five-year-old boy who gets lost in India, ends up thousands of miles from home, and years later uses technology and sheer determination to find his family. It’s emotional and suspenseful, and will leave you guessing, “Can this guy actually figure out where he came from?” We loved the unexpected twists and the feel-good story about never giving up. Lion is a movie you won’t forget about for a long time.
15. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) – PG-13
The Pursuit of Happyness is based on the true story of a struggling dad who goes from being homeless to pursuing a career that could completely change his life. It’s about taking rejection, failure, and really tough circumstances and refusing to let them decide your future. A fantastic and heartwarming underdog story that makes you root for someone who refuses to quit.
