The other night, I was trying to convince my teenager to watch one of my favorite movies from the ’90s.
“Trust me,” I said. “It’s a classic. You’re gonna love it!“
That’s when he looked up from his phone and said, “Is it in black and white?”
After staring at him for a solid five seconds, I said, “Noooo. It isn’t.”
“Did it come out in the 1900s?” he said.
The 1900s….
Apparently, today’s generation is convinced that anything that happened before 2005 belongs in the same historical category as archaic phone booths and dial-up internet.
But here’s the funny thing: once I finally convinced him to sit down with me and watch it (by bribing him with his favorite snacks), something he didn’t expect happened. He laughed. He got invested in the characters. And by the end, he sheepishly admitted that the movie was actually… “Pretty good, Mom.” (His way of confessing he liked it without giving me too much credit.)
