20 No-Fuss Dorm Rooms for Guys

by Nancy Reynolds July 29, 2018

This post offers 20 no-fuss dorm rooms for guys.

Your boy is headed off to college – that’s so exciting! As a mom with two kids in college, I can relate to how you must be feeling – excited and eager to get him settled, but also concerned that he’ll find his stride once he’s there. Mostly, you’re just hoping he’ll be happy in college.

I’ve found one of the key ingredients of happy college kids is helping them create a dorm they can call their own – one that’s comfortable, organized and, most importantly, feels like home.

The more “at home” and relaxed they feel in their dorm, the smoother their transition into college will be, the better they’ll sleep, (which is so incredibly important in college), the easier it will be for them to study, and the more comfortable they’ll feel about inviting friends over to hang out in their dorm.

To help you find the inspiration you’re looking for, I’ve scoured the Internet for the best-of-the-best dorm ideas for guys. And, considering the fact that most guys prefer a “no-fuss” set-up in their dorm, you’ll find plenty of ideas here that offer everything he needs in his dorm, but still keeps it low-key and understated.

Relaxed and Homey

This dorm has all the comforts of home without being over-the-top fussy. The cool tapestry and posters give the room a personal flair while the multi-functional nightstand with drawers keeps everything he needs right within arm’s reach. Check out the cozy bed – guys, just like girls, love their bed to be “sinkably” soft, (even if they don’t admit it), so be sure to make his bed as cozy as possible with a memory foam topper, (preferably 3″), plush mattress pad, soft sheets, a cozy comforter and plenty of squishy pillows.

Max Out Space with Extra Seating

Dorms are tiny, which means you have to get creative. Make the absolute most of every inch of real estate in the room by organizing his dorm space efficiently and adding in extra seating, if possible. Having another area for him to sit or put his feet up will make the room feel less like a cramped dorm room and more like a comfortable bedroom.

Organized, Yet Totally Cool

What’s not to love about this dorm? It’s comfortable, totally organized and has all the comforts of home. Shelving, bins, and risers help take advantage of every ounce of vertical and horizontal space without making it feel too crowded and there’s plenty of personal touches to make it feel like home.

Easy on the Eyes & Comfortable

Understated, yet totally stylish, this dorm, with its monochromatic color scheme, is easy on the eyes and still comfortable enough to come home to after a long day of classes. Toss in a few simple storage containers like baskets or bins and you’ll have the perfect set-up to keep all his things organized and neat.

Let’s Talk Collegiate

This UGA Creswell Hall dorm, (a dorm award finalist), offers plenty of inspiration for guys who want to show off their collegiate spirit. The UGA pennant flags and poster, black futon, and matching comforter and pillows make a killer statement while the dorm set-up offers plenty of space to chill out and relax with his roommate or friends. No doubt this dorm was one of the main “guy hangouts” on the floor.

Bare Minimum Functionality

Some guys are SO no-fuss that all they need (and want) in their dorm is the absolute essentials. And, that’s OK! Take the simple, no-fuss approach and equip him with the bare minimum – a few storage bins, simple wall decor, and a great comforter – and he’ll be set.

Everything Within Easy Reach

This dorm has it all. An awesome color scheme, great organization and just about everything he needs right within arm’s reach. The great body pillow makes the bed multi-functional – either as a bed or a couch when friends pop in –  and the footstool offers another place for him (or his friends) to sit or put his feet up.

Let the Walls Do the Talkin’

Dorm walls are typically drab and boring. Make the walls the focal point by letting him choose a handful of cool posters he loves. Frame ’em, don’t frame ’em – whatever suits his liking. Toss in a comforter that’ll make it easy for him to sleep in on Saturday mornings and add clever storage and seating options and you’ll have a dorm he’ll love. Don’t forget to add in a plush rug to give the room more warmth and a homey feeling. (Most dorm floors are either cold tile or crummy carpeting that’s been through the wringer.)

The Perfect Man Cave

I’m guessin’ just about every guy on the dorm floor hung out in this dorm! The TV, along with the totally relaxed and inviting set-up, makes this dorm the perfect man cave. Notice the backrest pillow and the cozy throw – both great additions to any dorm making it easy and comfy to relax, watch TV, play video games, study or even have a snack while chilling on the bed.

Efficiency at it’s Best

This dorm wins the “organized dorm of the year” award. The awesome bookshelf headboard gives him a ton more space while the lofted bed makes room for even more storage and the fridge below. Plus, the cool 4-drawer nightstand, which is a great addition to any dorm, keeps all his favorite things – books, snacks or his phone charger – within easy-to-grab reach.

Cool & Coordinated

Even guys love a coordinated dorm room. While you definitely don’t want to go for the “matchy-matchy” look often found in girl dorms, pulling together a complementary color scheme with a roommate will not only give the room a cleaner, more coordinated look, it will also make the room appear more spacious.

Mood-Enhancing Color

Don’t be afraid to toss in a splash of mood-enhancing color to your son’s dorm. Most guys opt for hues of blue, grey or red, but a splash of orange, brown, or even green can go a long way to give the dorm a brighter, more energized feel.

Collegiate Spirit with a Touch of Home

This Yale dorm, a double dorm that’s been converted to a single, is about as homey as you can get with just enough collegiate spirit to give it a serious cool factor. The framed artwork on the wall along with the Yale flag and pennant gives the room pizzazz while the lights framing the window, the antique typewriter and window plants make it feel like home.

When in Doubt, Hang a Flag

Some guys struggle with what to put on the wall in their dorm. When in doubt, just hang a flag! It’s fun, easy and it makes a statement. This flag, strategically placed just over the bed, along with matching red, white and blue pillows gives this room an “all-American” appeal.

Simple and Sunny

While most guys opt for some type of window covering in their dorm, you certainly don’t have to. Keep it sunny and give it an open feeling by letting the light shine in. A few simple accessories paired with a great comforter make this room warm, inviting and just plain easy to live in.

Cool, Collegiate, & Cozy

A few well-placed flags go a long way in making a statement and giving a dorm personality. Whether he shows off his collegiate spirit with a college flag, hangs a tapestry he digs, or puts up a few funny or inspirational posters, give your son the freedom to personalize his dorm by showcasing what matters to him. For tips on how to hang a tapestry or flag, check out this how-to video!

Ole Miss Dorm

Leisure at its Best

This dorm has it all! Style, total efficiency, and comfort to boot. The lofted bed gives him tons of space underneath to relax, chill out and watch TV.  Plus, his untraditional use of space – putting his TV on top of his fridge – certainly makes grabbing snacks out of the fridge a breeze! The matching window treatments pull the room together, the flags showcase his college spirit and his desk area is totally neat and organized. This dorm wins the “home away from home” award!

Taking Advantage of Space

Every ounce of real estate in dorms count. Take advantage of vertical and horizontal space and, if your son is on board with the idea, try lofting his bed for even more space beneath. This dorm maxes out space while putting everything, including the fridge and a few snacks, right at his fingertips.

Cool Guy Hangout

The one thing you want to strive for when setting up your son’s dorm is multi-functionality.  This dorm bed, with its propped back cushions, makes it easy to relax on the bed, study, have friends over or enjoy a snack, while still making it a cozy space for sleeping.

Tell ‘Em Who You Are

When you walk into your son’s empty dorm for the first time, don’t be alarmed by the starkness of the room. With a little planning and imagination, you can create a space that’s lively, shows off your son’s individual style and gives the room a homey feeling like this dorm.
